The story of Ferris Glass

Dan Ferris (Richie’s dad) took a stained glass class at a local Northern California community college circa 2006 and quickly found a huge passion and skill for the craft. He proceeded to acquire all necessary equipment and rapidly started making all kinds of pieces for his family. Dan taught Richie the basics, and Richie made his first pieces for Christmas 2006.

Dan unfortunately passed away in 2010, and Richie eventually inherited the stained glass equipment. It wasn’t until early 2017 that Richie got out the equipment and re-learned the process while making Charlette a birthday present (a WAY too ambitious piece for how long it had been). However, the setup was unideal (cutting and grinding glass in a carpeted bedroom), and it was hard to get the time to devote to properly honing the skill, so the equipment was once again put away in a forgotten corner of the closet.

Then - a couple weeks into quarantine March 2020 - Richie realized how he could spend his excess of time at home. Now with a garage that presented a great setup for stained glass, Richie built up his equipment and supply and got to work. And here is when Charlette comes in to turn it all into a business!

A little Richie and Charlette background. They met summer 2014 when Richie sung to her during a production of the musical FOREVER PLAID. Charlette gave birth to their daughter Ruthie January 2018. They got engaged May 2019, and had a quarantine-simplified wedding October 2020!

Back to March 2020. Charlette saw Richie soldering his first piece back at it, was mesmorized, asked to try, and was instantly hooked. She quickly became the main solderer and designer of new sketches. She also had the idea to create a business for their art, naming it Ferris Glass, and is the force behind their social media!

We love what we do, we love that Ruthie loves what we do, and hope to get to make you some fun and lovely stained glass pieces soon!
